Aaron Copland

Aaron Copland was one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. Born in 1900 in Brooklyn, New York, Copland is known for creating a distinctly American musical style that drew on folk music, jazz, and other indigenous American influences.

Copland's early musical training was in Paris, where he studied with the renowned teacher Nadia Boulanger in the 1920s. During this time, he began to develop his signature style, which combined modernist techniques with a populist sensibility. His early works, such as the ballet score “Grohg” and the orchestral piece “Music for the Theater,” showcased his ability to create music that was both intellectually sophisticated and accessible to a wide audience.

Copland's breakthrough came in the 1930s, with the premiere of his ballet “Billy the Kid” in 1938. This work, which tells the story of the legendary outlaw, was a critical and popular success, and established Copland as a leading figure in American music. Other major works from this period include the ballet “Rodeo” and the orchestral piece “Appalachian Spring,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945.

Throughout his career, Copland remained committed to creating music that reflected the spirit and character of the United States. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 14th 1900. He died in Sleepy Hollow, New York on December 2nd, 1990.
